The ground is low and flat, and the clay can stay soggy through a wet Ballarat winter, which drowns young grass roots.

Getting the water to drain away

Grass won't establish in soil that stays waterlogged. Before we spray, we shape the yard so water runs away from the house, fill hollows where it pools, and open up heavy clay with gypsum and topsoil.
