Hydroseeding FAQs

Hydroseeding FAQs

Hydroseeding FAQs with straight answers about cost, process, timing and aftercare.

Cost

How much does hydroseeding cost in Melbourne?

Usually $5–$8 per m², or about $790 for a 120m² backyard. Our hydroseeding cost guide covers what changes the price, with sample jobs and a calculator.

Is hydroseeding cheaper than turf?

Once it's established, yes – and often better. Because the grass grows from seed in your own soil, the roots go deeper and there are no seams. The trade-off is time: turf looks finished on day one.

Do you charge for quotes?

No – quotes and site checks are free.

Is there a minimum job size?

Our minimum job is $490, which covers most yards up to 50m².

Process

What prep does my yard need?

Bare, level soil that's free of weeds and rubble. If your yard isn't there yet, we can take care of the prep for you.

How long does spraying take?

Most home lawns are sprayed in a few hours.

Do I need to be home?

Not for the spray – just leave side access open.

What's in the mix?

Seed, mulch, fertiliser, a natural tackifier and a temporary green dye.

Timing & weather

What time of year is best?

Spring and autumn are ideal in Melbourne, when soil is warm and rain is reliable. We can spray year-round with the right blend and a watering plan.

Will it wash away in rain?

The mulch and a natural tackifier bind the seed to the soil, so normal rain helps rather than hurts. In a severe storm we'll check in and re-spray any washed patches.

Can you hydroseed in winter?

Yes, with a cool-season blend – germination is just a little slower.

What about a heatwave after spraying?

Water a little more often; we'll send reminders.

Aftercare

How much watering does it need?

Light, frequent watering for the first few weeks – usually a few short sessions a day. You'll get a written watering plan on spray day.

How long until I can walk on it?

You'll see green in about 7–10 days. Light foot traffic is fine after roughly 4 weeks, and most lawns are ready for their first mow at around 6 weeks.

When do I first mow?

Usually around 6 weeks, on a high setting.

When should I fertilise?

At about 8 weeks – it's in your aftercare plan.

Hydroseed vs turf

Is hydroseeding as good as turf?

Once it's established, yes – and often better. Because the grass grows from seed in your own soil, the roots go deeper and there are no seams. The trade-off is time: turf looks finished on day one.

Which lasts longer?

Both last for years with good care; seeded lawns often have deeper roots.

Which is better for slopes?

Hydroseeding – it sprays evenly and won't slip like rolls can.

Do you guarantee results?

Yes. Our germination guarantee: if any area hasn't germinated within 21 days of spraying (with the watering plan followed), we re-spray it free of charge.
