When Is the Best Time to Hydroseed in Melbourne?
The best time to hydroseed in Melbourne is spring or autumn. Soil is warm enough for seed to germinate quickly, and rain is reliable enough that you aren't fighting the weather. That said, you can hydroseed year-round with the right blend.
Spring: September to November
Spring is the most popular time to hydroseed. Soil temperatures climb, days get longer and germination is fast, often under a week for warm-season blends.
The only catch is timing. Spray too late in November and your lawn meets its first heatwave while it's still young.
Autumn: March to May
Autumn is our favourite season to spray. The soil still holds summer warmth, the air is cooler, and rain picks up.
That combination means less watering and less stress on young grass. By winter the lawn has good roots.
Summer and winter
Summer works if you can water consistently, but hot northerly winds can dry out new seed within hours. We add extra tackifier and mulch to protect it.
Winter is slower. Cool-season blends still germinate, but it takes longer to see full cover.
What the numbers say
The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Melbourne show why spring and autumn work so well: mild temperatures with steady rainfall across the months.
If you're on the western plains, rainfall is lower, so plan on more watering whatever the season. Our Tarneit and Werribee pages cover that in more detail.
Book for spring or autumn if you can. If you can't wait, we'll adjust the blend and watering plan to suit the season.
