How to Water a New Hydroseeded Lawn
How to water a new hydroseeded lawn comes down to one idea: keep the mulch damp, not soaked. Seed needs constant moisture to germinate, but too much water washes it around or rots it. Here's the week-by-week plan we give every customer.
- Weeks 1–2: little and often
- Weeks 3–4: longer and less often
- Weeks 5–6 and beyond
- Staying within Victoria's water rules
Weeks 1–2: little and often
Water two to three times a day for five to ten minutes. The goal is to keep the green mulch layer damp all day.
If you see water pooling or running off, cut back. On hot, windy days add an extra session.
Weeks 3–4: longer and less often
Once the grass is up and about 2–3cm tall, water once or twice a day for longer.
This pushes roots deeper into the soil instead of staying near the surface.
Weeks 5–6 and beyond
Drop to every second or third day, with a deep soak each time. After the first mow, treat it like an established lawn and water when it needs it.
Staying within Victoria's water rules
Victoria's permanent water saving rules apply to new lawns too.
Watering systems can run between 6pm and 10am. A hand-held hose needs a trigger nozzle, but can be used at any time.
Watering early in the morning or in the evening also means less water lost to evaporation. Melbourne Water's water-saving guide has more tips.
Keep the mulch damp for two weeks, then water longer and less often. Stick to the 6pm–10am window for sprinklers.
